    So Jakarta

Well hello Jakarta and are we well today?

You know, I prayed for you all week
I prayed that terror and strife begone
Ugh! And how long will this traffic jam be?
    "Only two hours", you say?
I heave a sigh in lap of luxury
Woe is the disparity beyond this tinted glass

In smog and heat and noise and grime
I wonder how many of those he needs to sell
Before his family can taste some providence
    We're segregated by fiberglass?
    Bet it's bullet proof too
And how many remote controls does one car need?

    Alienation, Alleviation, Aviation
The mind goes in a loop
    As the chauffeur plods on
Bumper to bumper, inch by inch

    White gloves greet upon arrival
Followed by an entourage of seven to one
I really didn't request for this
And would have been happy still
Had it been you, me and bicycle
    But prolly not in Jakarta
Where the norm is not my norm
Is there a need to conform?

Airport marks the ends of  visit
Yet I don't long for home
    I long for rest
    Restful repose
    More green
    Less people
    No noise
    Sea
    Me

    Edinburgh the Good

While in the confines of a class in hues of grey
Surviving Cultural Literacy the evening past
    The cute Professor
With persona of Willy Wonka by Johnny Depp
    Failed to retain my attention
    Because I was hungry
    From several weeks skinnier

    A cloud of misty thoughts
Randomly alternating in my mind (involving food no less!)
Oh that gorgeous pub we stumbled upon

That perfect summer night in Edinburgh

    4987_92477128095_639503095_1999689_2930919_n

    Where mussels and fries

    Steak and ale pie

    Oooo Sticky toffee pudding

All on the menu...FOR ME! ME! ME!

I but glanced at the selection
    and proclaimed a resounding YES!

To be coupled of course with pint worthy brew

Blessed glorious beautiful pints of brew!

I had crossed the border with a kid lawyer sister
And one bona-fide McDermid in tow
    Companions for the weekend

    Sylvan Idyll
(New likey word in my vocabulary...)

The food that night I say again, intoxicatingly awesome

    The walk 'home' so surreal

    Edinburgh is crazy beautiful

Kinda like Rome meets Paris Meets Princess Diaries' Castle on a hill

    Steeples, Churches, Kilts

Gotta love em men in Kilts

    Cue movie in my mind
    Starring William Wallace

    Ah...words fail me
But pictures from Kid Lawyer's camera don't
They bid me say no more
(OK so Wallace above was not captured by our camera)
Hush and come see what I see
    Edinburgh the good
    The very, very good!

Not quite Scotland yet, but Keswick...close enough...

And how did I digress from the confines of my class to Edinburgh, to Wallace to Keswick?

Oh I don't know...perhaps the soul wanders...in search of food, old world charm and green open spaces.

It is after all the most natural thing to do...is it not?

All credit goes to Kid-Lawyer-Sister-photo-taker extraordinaire. Love ya to bits Squirt!

The Hollow Thoughts of a Squid Impersonator

When you're in Singapore and you hear the words 'Blur Sotong', it isn't actually an invitation to partake in fried calamari.

    SOTONG
Malay for “squid”. Used to describe someone as rather inept or in a world of his own. Presumably, it comes from the squid’s emission of a cloud of ink, hence the popular phrase, “blur like sotong.” May be used as both noun and adjective.

There are moments when my world is like a blur and  I enter into Sotong mode...blup, blup. blup...

Ms Mei the Silly Squid Impersonator...

Think I've lingered too long in 'squid zone' lately...
Don't know if it's seasonal or by choice
Hmm perhaps this is not me
Perhaps I'm just a squid impersonator..
    Too smart for the moment
My wisdom comes pegged to responsibility
    Stuff this!
Isn't it so much easier to 'act blur' sometimes?

Mental holiday away from facts and intelligence...
Oh to numb the thoughts and submerge in water
    How placid!
To be a blur sotong for yet another day
    Blup, blup, blup

    Mummy what's wrong?
Asked the Fish, she's baby no more...
She waited til the following morning to inquire
I found her at the foot of my bed that morning
Curled on the floor, with bear bear and blankey
She had wanted to comfort me
    But she didn't know how
And so at the foot of my bed she lay
Her little way of pledging her allegiance
    My precious fish

Mummy's just fine my darling fish
    Why do you ask?
Because you've been quiet lately mummy
And you look like you're on screen saver mode
Hah! "Screen saver mode"...a term she stole from me
Screen saver mode is second to being 'Sotong'
Where you smile and you nod but your soul is absent
And a thousand tropical fishies swim by...
    That's the setting I programmed
    ...on my screen saver mode
    Just fine baby...mummy's just fine
    Let's go swimming shall we?
    Water beckons!
    Blup, Blup, blup...

    Later that day...
Got a call from my ma
She says..."Why you so long time never call me ah?"
I say...Dunno ma, you know how it is ma
She says..."Go drink some herbal chicken soup go!"
    I say...I'm a big gurl now...Please don't nag me maaa...
She says..."Listen to your ma, if you drink chicken soup, you might just get your soul back!"
    Ahahaha...Chicken soup...good for the soul...now I get it!...
How can she be so intuitive like that?
Any guesses on what I'm having for dinner tonight?

    I Write

    So

    I write and write
And then continue to write a blog?
    Why the need to write
And what's with all the writing?

    As it is
    I'm back at school
    Studying nights
    Working days
    Scholarship it is
    Doing well I am
    Top of the class
    Top of the school
    Yet never quite
    On top of it

    Writing
    Academic essays
    Scare me

    Not being able to
    Write
    Scares me

    Feeling scared
    Messes with my head
    And drives me to
    Write
    So at least
    Some thoughts are
    Released
    From the confines of
    The head
    And transferred
    Into something
    Tangible
    More manageable
    Somewhat

    At work I write
    Emails, letters, recommendations
    I'm good at it
    I know I am
    They know I am

    For school, I wrote
    That dreaded English paper
    Titled "The Pain of Separation"
    To include
    Some literature review
    Based on
    Tobias Wolff's
    Writings
    Odd title, odd paper,
    Difficult!
    But dealt with
    Relieved to hear
    "It's astonishingly well written"
    Says he

    Next
    Just waiting to be written
    Is this painful journal
    On all things New Zealand
    Having explored
    Topography, Terrain
    Population, Migration
    Physical to human
    Cradle to grave
    Working on it
    While trying hard
    Not to get worked up
    Over it
    Dead to New Zealand
    Too soon
    Amen

    At home I write
    For pleasure derived from pain
    To make sense of madness
    And to reason that
    Life is still
    Worth writing about

    Therefore I write
    Because I need
    To find closure
    To remember
    To forget
    And then I'll be
    Done...
    Definitely maybe
    But STOP
    I won't
    Until
    Death becomes her
    And
    She becomes history
    History becomes a book
    Written by none other
    Than Her

    Girlie Angst

    She really didn't mean to...
    Beat the living daylights...
    Out of her opponent ...
    This morning...
    Really she didn't.
    She's normally nice.
    Docile even.
    But hey...
    Muay Thai!
It was just waiting to happen
    And happen it did
    Man it felt good
    Whoops, she means sowee
    *Girlie Giggle*
    Up next...
    CAPOEIRA!
    *Evil Grin*
    Mmmmmm
    CAPOEIRA!
    Yes
    CAPOEIRA!
